Bitcoin Drops Below $76,000 Following Senate's CLARITY Act Stalemate

On September 16, Bitcoin's price fell to approximately $75,800, marking a decline of about 1.5%. This drop occurred in the context of a broader downturn in the cryptocurrency market, with XRP experiencing a nearly 8% decrease, while Ethereum and Solana saw declines of around 3% and 3.5%, respectively. The downturn followed the U.S. Senate's failure to advance the CLARITY Act, a proposed bill aimed at clarifying the regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies by delineating oversight responsibilities between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Despite the overall market decline, Bitcoin's regulatory status as a commodity remained largely unchanged, which contributed to its relatively smaller drop compared to other cryptocurrencies. The CLARITY Act was expected to provide clearer rules for exchanges and custody standards but would not have directly altered Bitcoin's status. The market reaction suggested that the regulatory disappointment impacted crypto intermediaries, such as Coinbase, which saw its shares drop by 9% in the same session, rather than Bitcoin itself.

Additional pressures on Bitcoin's price included rising oil prices and increasing Treasury yields, which were already affecting risk assets prior to the Senate vote. Brent crude closed at $108.75, and the 10-year Treasury yield reached its highest level since 2007. Furthermore, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced significant outflows, totaling approximately $450 million on September 15, adding to the downward pressure on Bitcoin's price. Analysts suggest that reclaiming the price level of $78,189 would indicate a recovery from the regulatory setback, but until then, Bitcoin's price remains sensitive to broader macroeconomic factors.
