U.S. Senate Rejects CLARITY Act, Impacting Major Cryptocurrencies

On September 15, 2026, the U.S. Senate voted against the CLARITY Act, failing to secure the necessary 60 votes for cloture with a tally of 49 in favor and 50 against. The bill's rejection has significant implications for the cryptocurrency market, particularly for XRP, which saw a sharp decline of nearly 8% following the vote. Other cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, also experienced losses, though to a lesser extent, as market participants reassess the regulatory landscape.

The failure of the CLARITY Act was marked by unexpected opposition from several Democrats who had previously negotiated the bill. Key sticking points included an ethics package that addressed officials' spouses but excluded their children, raising concerns about money-laundering safeguards. The rejection of the bill leaves the future of cryptocurrencies uncertain, as it aimed to establish clearer regulatory frameworks that could have benefited various digital assets.

In the aftermath of the vote, XRP's price dropped to $1.29, while Bitcoin fell to $75,924. Ethereum and Solana also recorded declines of 3.15% and 3.67%, respectively. The market's reaction highlights the varying degrees of regulatory dependence among these cryptocurrencies, with XRP being particularly vulnerable due to its reliance on interpretations from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Despite the setback, existing regulations remain intact, meaning that XRP retains its commodity classification established earlier this year. However, the uncertainty surrounding future regulatory actions could complicate recovery efforts for XRP and other cryptocurrencies as traders navigate a market influenced by broader economic factors.
