Canada to Impose Retaliatory Tariffs Following US Trade Negotiation Breakdown

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on August 22 that Canada will implement retaliatory import taxes on key sectors including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. This decision comes in response to the United States imposing a 50% tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian exports, which represents about 5% of Canada's total shipments to the US.

The tariffs from the US took effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on August 22, coinciding with Carney's announcement. The breakdown of trade negotiations was attributed to last-minute changes proposed by the US, which Canada deemed unfair and uneconomic, leading to the suspension of talks and the recall of Canadian negotiators.

Carney indicated that measures to support Canadian workers and businesses affected by these tariffs are forthcoming. This escalation in trade tensions is part of a recurring pattern in US-Canada relations, particularly during President Trump's administration, which has seen previous rounds of tariffs targeting various sectors.
