Micron Unveils World's First 512GB DDR5 Memory Module, Set for Mass Production in 2027

Micron Technology, a leading semiconductor manufacturer, has introduced the world's first 512GB DDR5 RDIMM memory module designed specifically for server applications. This innovative module boasts a maximum speed of 9200 MT/s and is currently undergoing validation by major industry players AMD and Intel for compatibility with future platforms.

The 512GB module achieves its impressive capacity through a technique known as vertical stacking of DRAM chips. In a server configuration utilizing 24 of these modules, total memory capacity can reach up to 12 TB. The single module has a rated power consumption of 16W, significantly lower than the combined 44.2W of four 128GB modules, representing a reduction of over 60%.

Micron claims that this new memory module enhances performance in memory-intensive tasks, such as those using Spark SVM, by up to 1.4 times compared to the previously available 256GB DDR5 modules. This announcement follows the earlier sampling of the 256GB DDR5 RDIMM, which also features a maximum speed of 9200 MT/s and utilizes 1-gamma DRAM and 3D stacking technology. Mass production of the 512GB module is scheduled for 2027, with pricing details yet to be disclosed.
