Collaboration on Ethereum Account Abstraction Standards Ends

A collaboration aimed at reconciling two Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) has concluded without agreement, leading to separate paths for the development of account-abstraction standards. Derek Chiang, founder of Ethlabs and ZeroDev, announced that the effort to align Base's EIP-8130 with Ethereum's EIP-8141 Frame Transactions ended last week. Both proposals are currently listed as drafts in the official Ethereum Improvement Proposal registry.

The two drafts propose different approaches to account abstraction, which allows smart-contract accounts to define their own validation logic. EIP-8130 introduces a new typed transaction system with an on-chain keystore and account-configuration system, while EIP-8141 divides transactions into a sequence of frames that validate and execute user operations. The divergence means that wallet and application developers will face increased integration challenges as they adapt to the incompatible transaction types.

Chiang emphasized that the failed collaboration places a burden on developers to manage the fragmentation that results from the split. He noted that while software could potentially mask these differences from users, the lack of a unified standard complicates the development landscape. Ethlabs plans to continue supporting Frame Transactions for Hegotá, an upcoming Ethereum hard fork, and aims to work with Layer 2 solutions and wallets for implementation.
