Digital Asset Treasury Companies Reach $340 Billion Market Cap

The market capitalization of Digital Asset Treasury Companies (DATs) has surged to approximately $340 billion, reflecting a 10% increase since mid-August. This growth positions DATs alongside mid-cap tech companies such as Netflix and Salesforce, highlighting the rapid expansion of this sector.

Since 2020, the number of publicly traded firms utilizing cryptocurrency as a core balance-sheet strategy has increased dramatically from four to 142, with 76 of those companies established in 2025 alone. DATs allow investors to purchase equity in firms that hold cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, rather than buying the digital assets directly.

Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, remains the largest player in the DAT sector, holding hundreds of thousands of Bitcoin and boasting a market cap of around $42.5 billion. However, the sector has experienced volatility, with market caps for the top 50 Bitcoin-holding DATs plummeting from $150 billion in July 2025 to $67 billion by August, illustrating the risks associated with trading at premiums or discounts to their actual crypto holdings.
