Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rates for First Time Since July 2023, Impacting Cryptocurrency Markets

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage points on September 16, 2026, marking the first increase since July 2023. The unanimous decision by the Federal Open Market Committee aims to address persistent inflation, which remains above the central bank's target. The new target range for the federal funds rate is now set between 3.75% and 4%.

In response to the Fed's announcement, Bitcoin experienced volatility, trading at approximately $75,928, reflecting a slight increase of 0.6% over the previous 24 hours. Other cryptocurrencies also saw significant movements, with Zcash surging by 19% to reach $1,383.30 shortly after the announcement. The total cryptocurrency market capitalization stood at $2.68 trillion, with Bitcoin maintaining a dominance of 56.84%.

The Fed's decision comes amid a backdrop of solid economic activity, with job gains keeping pace with workforce growth and a stable unemployment rate. The committee's projections indicate the possibility of another rate hike before the end of the year, as inflation forecasts remain elevated. Traders are closely monitoring these developments, with market expectations shifting in response to the Fed's guidance.
