Garrett Jin Expands Short Position on ZEC Amid Rising Prices
Zcash Holders Back 25-Second Blocks and Keep Bitcoin-Style…
What Did Zcash Holders Approve?
Zcash holders have overwhelmingly backed faster transactions and preservation of the network's bitcoin-style halving schedule in a governance vote that drew participation from nearly 2.4 million ZEC.The vote, tied to the upcoming NU7 network upgrade, involved roughly two-thirds of the approximately 3.6 million ZEC eligible at the snapshot. Voting power was weighted by the amount of eligible ZEC rather than by individual participants, with each eligible coin representing one vote.Organizers had set 1 million ZEC as the minimum participation level needed for the outcome to be considered representative of token holders.About 99.9% of participating ZEC supported reducing Zcash's block time to 25 seconds from 75 seconds. Shorter block intervals should allow transactions to be included in the blockchain more quickly, reducing the time users wait for confirmation.Another 98.9% voted to retain Zcash's existing halving schedule rather than move toward a smoother issuance model. Under the current structure, rewards paid to miners through newly created ZEC are reduced by half at predetermined intervals, following a monetary policy broadly modeled on bitcoin. Why Does Keeping the Halving Schedule Matter?
The alternative considered by voters would have replaced large scheduled reductions in new ZEC issuance with a more gradual decline in block rewards.Keeping halvings preserves a monetary structure that holders already understand and allows investors to anticipate major changes in new supply on a defined timetable. The decision also maintains one of the clearest similarities between Zcash's issuance model and bitcoin's.Holders separately voted 96.6% in favor of waiting until February 2031 before beginning to reissue ZEC accumulated through the Network Sustainability Mechanism. The mechanism removes ZEC from circulating supply, including at least 60% of transaction fees, and is designed to recycle those coins later through future block rewards. It does not alter Zcash's maximum supply.Delaying that reissuance allows the collected ZEC to accumulate for several years while leaving the existing halving timetable intact.Investor Takeaway
Zcash holders have chosen faster transaction settlement without changing the network's familiar halving structure. For ZEC investors, that keeps the long-term issuance schedule predictable while developers focus on improving usability and private-payment performance.
How Did Zcash Keep the Vote Private?
The governance process itself was notable because only ZEC held inside Ironwood, Zcash's newest shielded transaction pool, was eligible to participate.Shielded Zcash transactions allow the network to verify that coins exist and are being spent correctly without publicly exposing balances or transaction details. The same privacy model was applied to governance. In conventional token voting, a wallet controlling a large number of tokens can reveal both its voting choice and the size of its holdings. Zcash's system allowed voting weight to count toward the final result without publicly linking an individual holder's balance to a particular ballot.Votes were encrypted and divided into 16 separate components before counting. Validators could calculate the aggregate outcome without reconstructing which holder cast a particular vote or how much ZEC that voter controlled. The turnout also represented a major increase from earlier token-holder polling. A February NU7 sentiment poll attracted participation equivalent to only 7.25% of circulating ZEC and exposed disagreements between token holders and the Zcash Community Advisory Panel. What Happens Next With NU7?
Holders showed little appetite for delaying the wider network upgrade. Approximately 99.3% of voting ZEC supported shipping NU7 as quickly as possible, with any feature not ready by a September 30 deadline removed rather than holding back the entire release. The 25-second block proposal fits into a wider development effort aimed at speeding up private ZEC payments. Recent Zcash software tests have reduced proof-generation times on mobile devices from more than three seconds to below 200 milliseconds in some cases, while work including Zakura and Project Tachyon is targeting higher private-transaction throughput. The governance result gives developers a clearer set of priorities for NU7 after months of debate over which features should be included. The vote does not itself alter the protocol. The selected changes still need to be implemented, tested and incorporated into the eventual network upgrade. For Zcash, however, nearly 2.4 million ZEC participating in a private governance process provides a substantial test of whether shielded technology can be used not only for payments but also for collective decisions over the network's technical roadmap and monetary policy.Source: FinanceFeeds
