Former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison Has Joined Manifund

      • Former Alameda Research head Caroline Ellison has joined the nonprofit Manifund.
      • She started on a trial basis on July 13, and moved to full-time on August 10.
      • Ellison previously pleaded guilty in the FTX case, cooperated with investigators, and received a two-year prison sentence.

Former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison has joined the nonprofit Manifund. The project’s co-founder, Austin Chen, announced the news.

According to him, Ellison will help develop Manifund’s funding platform and explore ways to allocate charitable funds more effectively.

Chen said she had been working with the organization on a trial basis since July 13, and switched to full-time on August 10. Before the public announcement, Ellison posted content and assisted Manifund users under the pseudonym Carol.

Manifund is a nonprofit grantmaking platform. The project allows donors to direct funds to initiatives related to effective altruism, technical research, AI safety, and other areas.

      What Happened to Caroline Ellison

Ellison was one of the key figures in the FTX collapse case. In December 2022, she pleaded guilty to seven charges and agreed to cooperate with the U.S. Department of Justice in the case against former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried.

In September 2024, the former head of Alameda Research was sentenced to two years in prison for her role in the FTX fraud.

Later, Ellison was moved to “conditional confinement” ahead of early release. At the time, she was at a reintegration office in New York.

It is also worth noting that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reached settlements with Ellison and other former FTX executives. The regulator barred her from holding executive roles at public companies for 10 years.

In a Manifund statement, Chen noted that he believes “in redemption” and wants to give Ellison a chance to “be useful to the world again.” Ellison herself said she regrets her actions at Alameda and FTX, and is grateful for a “second chance.”
