EU Enforces 24-Hour Reporting for Crypto Wallet Vulnerabilities Under Cyber Resilience Act

As of September 11, 2026, companies selling crypto wallets in the European Union are mandated to report any actively exploited vulnerabilities to regulators within a strict 24-hour timeframe. Failure to comply can result in fines reaching up to €15 million or 2.5% of the company's annual global turnover, whichever amount is greater. This requirement is part of the EU's Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), which aims to enhance cybersecurity measures for digital products, including both hardware and software wallets.

The CRA outlines a two-stage notification process. Manufacturers must first submit an early warning through the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity's (ENISA) Single Reporting Platform within 24 hours of discovering an active exploitation. A more detailed report, including the scope and technical specifics of the incident, must follow within 72 hours. Notably, the reporting obligation begins only when manufacturers are aware of an active threat, not when a potential issue is reported by external researchers.

The urgency of this legislation follows a significant security incident in July 2026, which resulted in losses exceeding 1,778.84 BTC, valued at approximately $112.7 million. The CRA also includes broader security mandates that will take effect on December 11, 2027, requiring manufacturers to implement security-by-design principles and proper certification processes. Companies based outside the EU that sell wallets in the region will also be subject to these regulations, emphasizing the global impact of the CRA on the crypto wallet market.

This new reporting requirement is expected to transform how the crypto industry addresses security incidents. By mandating timely notifications to affected users and regulators, the CRA discourages delayed disclosures and encourages manufacturers to invest in robust threat intelligence systems.
