Hyper Foundation's Control of Staked HYPE Raises Centralization Concerns

The Hyper Foundation currently controls approximately 49% of all staked HYPE tokens, raising significant concerns regarding centralization within the governance of Hyperliquid, a Layer 1 blockchain focused on decentralized finance. As of June 2026, around 436 million HYPE tokens are staked, which constitutes about 43.6% of the total supply of 1 billion tokens. The Foundation's validators dominate this staking landscape, with individual validator shares ranging from 3.50% to 12.73%.

The governance model of HYPE is stake-weighted, meaning that voting power is directly proportional to the amount of tokens staked. This dynamic was evident in a recent governance vote in December 2025, where a proposal to burn 37.5 million HYPE tokens received 85% support. The concentration of staked tokens among a few validators poses risks, as it creates a smaller attack surface for potential network compromises compared to a more decentralized validator structure.

Despite ongoing community discussions about the implications of this centralization, there have been no formal initiatives announced to diversify validator power or to limit the Foundation's stake. The lack of governance proposals aimed at redistributing stake more broadly has left many in the community concerned about the long-term implications for governance and security within the Hyperliquid ecosystem.
