Maple Finance Becomes Second-Largest Crypto Lender, Surpassing $15 Billion in Loans
Maple Finance has emerged as the second-largest institutional crypto lender globally, trailing only Tether. The onchain credit platform has originated between $15 billion and $22 billion in cumulative loans since its inception, with active loans currently totaling approximately $1.9 billion. The platform's total value locked is estimated to be between $2.4 billion and $5 billion, depending on the method of calculation.
Following the collapse of several crypto lending firms in 2022, Maple Finance shifted its strategy from uncollateralized lending to secured, overcollateralized positions. This pivot, led by CEO Sid Powell, has resulted in a repayment rate exceeding 99% and no reported losses on overcollateralized loans. Maple's borrower base consists of professional counterparties, including trading firms and crypto-native funds, rather than retail clients.
Maple pools liquidity from institutional depositors, primarily in USDC and USDT, and lends it to vetted borrowers at interest rates that accurately reflect credit risk. The platform has distributed over $100 million in interest to liquidity providers. Additionally, Maple has expanded its operations across multiple blockchains, including Ethereum and Solana, and has introduced Syrup, a yield-bearing stablecoin wrapper product that allows broader access to its lending yields.
