Pentagon Considers Troop Withdrawal from Persian Gulf Following Iranian Strikes

The Pentagon is contemplating a significant shift in U.S. military strategy by potentially withdrawing troops from the Persian Gulf. This consideration comes after Iranian missile and drone strikes damaged at least 20 American military sites in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE, prompting discussions among Defense Department officials and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) about the future of U.S. forces in the region.

The conflict, termed Operation Epic Fury, began on February 28, 2026, with U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran. In retaliation, Iran has targeted U.S. military assets, resulting in extensive damage to approximately 228 structures and military equipment. The ongoing conflict has also led to casualties among U.S. service members and early cost estimates exceeding $5 billion.

While discussions about troop relocation are still in preliminary stages, potential new locations being considered include Jordan and the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia, which are further from Iranian strike capabilities. This marks a potential departure from the longstanding U.S. military presence in the Gulf, established since the 1991 Gulf War, which includes major bases in Qatar and Bahrain.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has not yet initiated a formal review of troop levels, indicating that the Pentagon is assessing political implications before making any commitments. The current discussions focus on whether rebuilding damaged facilities would be a prudent course of action or if it would merely repeat past mistakes.
