Pokémon X Account Hacked to Promote Fake Cryptocurrency

The official Pokémon account on X was hacked on August 27, during the franchise's 30th anniversary celebrations, leading to the promotion of a fraudulent cryptocurrency called $POKEMON. The attackers gained access to the account, which has over 8 million followers, and posted unauthorized content for approximately 30 minutes before The Pokémon Company regained control.

The scam posts falsely claimed that $POKEMON was an official cryptocurrency linked to the anniversary, complete with a contract address and a link that mimicked the legitimate anniversary website. The Pokémon Company quickly acted to remove the unauthorized posts and issued a statement clarifying that it has no affiliation with any cryptocurrency projects or tokens.

The timing of the hack coincided with significant events for the franchise, including the Pokémon World Championships, making the fraudulent claims appear more credible to casual fans. The Pokémon Company emphasized its distance from the cryptocurrency space, highlighting the ongoing challenges major entertainment brands face in navigating digital asset scams.
