Router Protocol Announces Shutdown and ROUTE Token Burn
Router Protocol has announced plans to cease operations by September 30, 2026, alongside a significant burn of 303,333,198 ROUTE tokens held in its treasury. This decision marks the end of over four years of development, which included the creation of a cross-chain bridge, Router Nitro, and various transaction systems across more than 60 blockchain networks.
In a notice released on September 4, Router Protocol instructed users holding ROUTE on centralized exchanges to follow the delisting notices of those exchanges and withdraw their assets before the respective deadlines. However, the notice did not specify a withdrawal timeline for assets in bridge contracts or liquidity-provider positions, leaving some users without clear guidance.
The planned burn of ROUTE tokens corresponds with three Ethereum addresses associated with the project's ecosystem, foundation, and team allocations. While the total amount matches the planned burn, the notice did not confirm the specific source addresses or the mechanism for executing the burn. Additionally, Router Protocol reported a total value locked of approximately $9,879.92, with no bridge volume recorded in the past month, indicating a significant decline in activity.
Router Protocol cited several factors for the shutdown, including the consolidation of activity on fewer chains and the inability of bridge fees to cover operational costs. The team explored various options for sustaining the protocol but did not find a viable solution. Following the shutdown, Router will open-source certain components of its technology, but it will not launch any new programs related to ROUTE.
