Samsung Electronics Anticipates Record Operating Profit in Q3 2023

Samsung Electronics is projected to achieve an operating profit exceeding 1 trillion won for the first time in the third quarter of 2023. Financial analysts estimate the company's revenue to reach approximately 206.64 trillion won, with an operating profit forecasted at 116.38 trillion won. This marks a significant milestone for the company as it navigates the rising prices of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) used in artificial intelligence applications.

Despite a decline in DRAM export volume from about 681.7 million units in May to 591.74 million units in July, the export value has increased by 18.5%, rising from $11.428 billion to $13.552 billion. This growth is attributed to a 36.6% increase in the export unit price, which climbed from $16.76 to $22.9. The supply of HBM4 is expanding to major clients like Nvidia, Microsoft, and Google, although initial yields are lower compared to previous generations, contributing to an ongoing DRAM supply shortage.

In response to market demands, Samsung's memory division plans to allocate around 70% of its production capacity to long-term supply agreements through 2031. Additionally, the company is considering converting its wafer foundry line S5 at the Pyeongtaek campus to memory production as early as next year. Meanwhile, SK Hynix is also expected to report third-quarter revenue of 101.76 trillion won and an operating profit of 79.16 trillion won.
