Strait of Hormuz Sees Significant Decline in Vessel Transit Calls

Recent data from IMF PortWatch indicates a dramatic decrease in the number of vessels transiting through the Strait of Hormuz since March 2026. The average daily transit calls have plummeted from approximately 91 to a current low of 12 as of July 19, 2026. The highest recorded transit calls during this period was 34 in the week ending June 30, 2026, while the lowest was just 1 on March 14, 2026.

The data shows that the 7-day average of vessel transit calls has not returned to the critical threshold of 60, which is necessary for market contracts to settle favorably. The latest week recorded only 85 transit calls, far below the required 420 for a full recovery. In contrast, other major chokepoints such as the Malacca Strait and Bab el-Mandeb have maintained transit levels close to their averages, indicating that the decline in Hormuz is not part of a broader global trend.

Analysis of the relationship between daily transit counts and market prices reveals no significant correlation. A series of 43 tests showed that the daily price movements did not align with the changes in vessel counts, suggesting that other factors may be influencing market behavior. The data collection process is also subject to delays, which complicates real-time analysis and decision-making regarding market conditions.
