Strategy Claims High Reserve Capital, Surpassing Most S&P 500 Financial Firms

Strategy, the company formerly known as MicroStrategy, has announced that it holds more reserve capital than nearly all financial firms in the S&P 500, with the exception of Berkshire Hathaway. As of August 30, 2026, Strategy reported approximately 845,050 BTC valued at around $63.73 billion, along with $6.7 billion in cash, bringing its total reserve capital to between $66 billion and $72.3 billion, depending on asset valuation.

Michael Saylor, the company's executive chairman, emphasized that only Berkshire Hathaway's reserve of approximately $365.5 billion exceeds Strategy's holdings. However, the metric used to define 'Total Reserve Capital' is proprietary to Strategy and combines Bitcoin and cash into a single figure, which differs from the standardized capital measures used by traditional financial institutions.

On August 31, 2026, Strategy resumed its Bitcoin acquisition program after a ten-week pause, purchasing an additional 4,603 BTC for about $370 million. This acquisition increased its total Bitcoin holdings to roughly 4% of the total circulating supply. Despite the announcement, shares of MSTR traded around $122.30, showing a slight decline rather than an expected increase in value.

Critics have raised concerns regarding the proprietary nature of the 'Total Reserve Capital' metric, suggesting it may not fully account for certain financial obligations. Investors are advised to focus on Bitcoin's price movements, Strategy's cost basis, and the company's capacity to manage its debt without liquidating its Bitcoin assets during market downturns.
