Swiss Bitcoin Pay Shuts Down Servers Following Suspected Data Breach

Swiss Bitcoin Pay, a Bitcoin payment processor based in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, has temporarily shut down its servers due to a suspected data breach. The company, which operates as a licensed Financial Intermediary, provides merchants with tools to accept Bitcoin payments through both on-chain transactions and the Lightning Network. Despite the precautionary measure, Swiss Bitcoin Pay has stated that no customer funds or private keys appear to be at risk.

The company, established in late 2022, charges a fee of 1% on payments retained in Bitcoin and 1.5% for automatic conversion to fiat currency. Its non-custodial architecture allows payments to flow directly to merchants' personal wallets, minimizing the risk of catastrophic fund loss in the event of a breach. However, the server infrastructure still retains sensitive merchant account data and transaction logs, which could be vulnerable.

No official statement has been released detailing the extent of the suspected breach, the type of data that may have been exposed, or the number of users potentially affected. In the wake of the incident, Swiss Bitcoin Pay has implemented minor security updates, while its app remains accessible on both iOS and Android platforms. This incident follows a similar data exposure event in August 2026 involving Pocket Bitcoin, another service in the Swiss crypto ecosystem, which affected over 5,400 customers but also reported no risk to customer funds.
