White House Crypto Advisor Challenges Banking Lobby Over Stablecoin Concerns
Patrick Witt, the Executive Director of the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets in the United States, has publicly criticized the banking industry for its claims regarding potential deposit outflows due to yield-bearing stablecoins. Witt's remarks come in response to a letter signed by 134 banking executives, which warned that allowing yields on payment stablecoins could lead to significant withdrawals from traditional banks, potentially amounting to hundreds of billions or even trillions of dollars.
Witt argues that the banking sector's fears are unfounded and inconsistent, pointing out that yield-bearing stablecoins have existed without causing the anticipated mass deposit flight. He also noted that banking organizations previously sought outright bans on interest-bearing stablecoins, yet continue to lobby for stricter regulations even after the introduction of the CLARITY Act, which prohibits interest payments on these digital assets.
In addition to countering the deposit flight narrative, Witt highlighted that compliant stablecoins, particularly those issued under the GENIUS Act framework, could actually attract new capital into the U.S. banking system. He suggested that foreign investors looking for dollar-denominated yield might invest in U.S.-backed stablecoins, thereby increasing deposits rather than depleting them.
This ongoing debate is part of broader legislative discussions in the U.S. aimed at establishing clear regulations for digital assets. While compromise efforts between lawmakers and industry representatives continue, no resolution has been reached, leaving the regulatory landscape uncertain. Witt's public stance indicates a potential alignment of the White House with the interests of the crypto industry, challenging the traditional banking sector's position.
