China Advocates for Diplomacy Amid New US Sanctions on Iran

The United States has intensified its economic pressure on Iran, marking six months of conflict that has significantly altered dynamics in the Middle East. On August 20, 2026, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a new sanctions package described as the toughest in history, aimed at further constraining Iran's economy and escalating pressure on its government. This announcement follows a fragile ceasefire brokered in April 2026, which has faced increasing strain amid ongoing military actions between the US, Israel, and Iran.

In response, China has called for constructive dialogue rather than confrontation. Lin Jian, spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, emphasized that sanctions and military force will not resolve the US-Iran conflict. He argued that unilateral economic coercion is counterproductive and that negotiations are essential for a sustainable resolution. China, which is Iran's largest oil customer, has a vested interest in maintaining stability in the region to ensure its energy security.

China's diplomatic efforts have included multiple phone calls by Foreign Minister Wang Yi to facilitate dialogue and a joint five-point peace proposal submitted alongside Pakistan. This positions China and Pakistan as key players in seeking a diplomatic framework to address the ongoing tensions. The situation remains precarious, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, where any incident could escalate regional tensions further, complicating both military and diplomatic efforts.
