Ether ETFs Shatter a 203-Session Record in a Single Move

U.S. spot ether exchange-traded funds attracted $220.8 million in net inflows on 20 August, their largest single-day intake in 203 trading sessions spanning 296 calendar days, according to SoSoValue data reported by Cointelegraph. The previous comparable figure was $246 million on 28 October 2025. On the same day, spot Bitcoin ETFs drew $608.3 million, pushing August's combined inflows to $2.07 billion.

Four Straight Sessions Built the Week's $1.6 Billion Haul

Bitcoin funds extended their positive streak to four consecutive sessions. Monday brought $297.6 million, Tuesday $189.3 million, Wednesday $517.2 million, and Thursday $608.3 million, SoSoValue data shows. The weekly total topped $1.6 billion. Cumulative net inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs reached $53.4 billion. August's $2.07 billion total already surpasses April's $1.97 billion, previously the strongest month of 2026, with seven trading sessions remaining. The inflows arrived alongside a Bitcoin rally that carried the price from roughly $64,100 at the start of the week to as high as $79,400 on 21 August, a gain of nearly 24%, according to CoinDesk and CNBC.

Why the Ether Record Matters More Than the Bitcoin Headline

Ether ETFs have occupied a different trajectory from their Bitcoin counterparts for most of 2026. While Bitcoin funds experienced an extended eight-week outflow streak earlier this year that drained approximately $8.26 billion, according to The Block, ether products quietly strung together five consecutive positive weeks through early August.Thursday's $220.8 million inflow broke that pattern of modest, steady accumulation. Ether ETFs took in approximately $512.2 million across the four-session week, lifting August net inflows to about $754.9 million and total net assets to $13.58 billion. BlackRock's ETHA has dominated the flows, recording $122 million in a single session on 19 August alone, SoSoValue data confirmed. Fidelity's FETH added $36.54 million, and Grayscale contributed $16 million during the same session.

The Supply Squeeze Behind the Flow Surge

On-chain data suggests the ETF demand is arriving in a tightening supply picture. Santiment data cited by AMBCrypto showed that Ethereum's exchange supply declined by roughly 15% over eleven weeks, from 7.70 million ETH on 2 June to 6.54 million ETH by 18 August, with approximately 1.15 million ETH withdrawn from exchanges, AMBCrypto reportedCryptoQuant separately noted that wallets holding between 10,000 and 100,000 ETH have increased their balances to a record 19.6 million ETH, up from about 14 million ETH in mid-2025. The combination of accelerating ETF inflows and declining exchange supply creates a narrower float for price discovery. Ether gained 4.6% to approximately $2,357 on 21 August and was up roughly 25% for the week, recovering substantially from levels below $1,900 earlier in the week. The 18% single-day surge on 19 August was driven partly by a leveraged short squeeze, but the underlying supply dynamics suggest the demand picture is structural rather than purely tactical.

Altcoin ETFs Joined the Session, but Scale Gaps Remain

The 20 August session was notable for its breadth. XRP ETFs added $13 million, and Solana ETFs contributed $15 million, marking a second consecutive day of positive inflows across all four major crypto ETF categories, CoinDesk reportedThe gap in scale, however, underscores how far altcoin ETFs remain from institutional significance. Ether's $220.8 million daily inflow was roughly eight times larger than XRP and Solana's combined $28 million. Whether the ether inflow record signals a durable shift or a one-session spike tied to Wednesday's short squeeze will become clearer next week.Ether ETF net assets of $13.58 billion still sit roughly $2 billion below their mark-to-market high, meaning a sustained flow recovery would need to survive a price pullback before it qualifies as a structural break from the pattern that defined most of 2026.
