France to Supply 16 Rafale Jets to Ukraine Starting in 2028

France has committed to providing 16 Rafale fighter jets to Ukraine, with deliveries scheduled to commence between 2028 and 2029. This decision was announced following a conversation between French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on August 22, which took place shortly after a Russian drone strike in Kryvyi Rih resulted in multiple casualties.

In addition to the Rafale jets, France is accelerating the shipment of Aster-30 interceptor missiles, originally set for delivery in October 2026, as part of a broader strategy to enhance Ukraine's air defense capabilities. The Aster-30 is integral to the SAMP/T air defense system, which is designed to engage various aerial threats, including ballistic missiles. France and Italy are collaborating to expedite this timeline.

Zelenskyy expressed appreciation for France's support, particularly for the licensing agreement that allows Ukraine to manufacture its own Aster-30 interceptors, SCALP cruise missiles, and AASM guided bombs by the end of 2026. This move marks a significant shift in France's defense strategy, focusing on enabling local production to mitigate supply chain issues and political challenges associated with arms shipments.

The formation of the Integrated Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition in July 2026 has facilitated this enhanced cooperation among European nations, aiming to bolster Ukraine's defenses amid ongoing conflict. The inclusion of next-generation SAMP/T-NG systems, expected to be delivered starting in 2027, further underscores France's commitment to supporting Ukraine's military capabilities.
