Full Sail Shuts Down Following $91,000 Security Breach

Full Sail, a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol operating on the Sui blockchain, has announced its permanent shutdown after a security incident resulted in the loss of approximately $91,000. The breach was linked to compromised price feeds from the oracle provider Switchboard, which allowed an attacker to drain funds from three of Full Sail's vaults. The incident, which became public on August 29, prompted Switchboard to suspend operations across four blockchains, including Sui and Aptos.

The vulnerability stemmed from issues within Switchboard's Move-language oracle implementations, which are used to provide price data for various protocols. Despite Full Sail's implementation of multi-oracle validation to mitigate risks, the faulty price feeds led to significant financial losses. Following the confirmation of the breach, Full Sail immediately paused all deposits and withdrawals, although the damage had already occurred by that time.

On September 2, Full Sail outlined its shutdown plan, which included disabling new deposits and halting liquidity provider reward claims. The protocol transitioned to a withdrawal-only mode for its remaining pools and committed to returning liquidity to users while covering any shortfalls personally. A detailed incident report is expected to be released soon, along with guides to assist users in recovering their funds.

The fallout from the incident extended beyond Full Sail, impacting the Virtue Money protocol, which reported losses of around $455,000 affecting 45 users. The combined losses from both protocols exceeded half a million dollars, highlighting the broader implications of the oracle failure across the DeFi ecosystem. The shutdown of Switchboard across multiple chains indicates that the issue may be inherent to the Move-language oracle code rather than isolated to a single blockchain.
