Goldman Sachs Cautions on Sustainability of AI Investment Boom

Goldman Sachs has issued a warning regarding the sustainability of the current artificial intelligence (AI) investment boom, suggesting that the frenzy may not lead to indefinite growth. Chief economist Jan Hatzius emphasized that while AI represents a significant structural shift in the economy, its immediate impact on U.S. GDP has been overstated, contributing 'basically zero' to growth in 2025 despite projections of trillion-dollar spending.

The bank forecasts that global capital expenditure on AI will reach approximately $1.019 trillion in 2026, with the United States accounting for about $581 billion of that total. Jim Covello, head of global equity research at Goldman Sachs, expressed concerns that the economic prospects of AI appear 'more questionable' than they did two years ago, highlighting uncertainties regarding returns on substantial infrastructure investments.

During a discussion in August 2026, Hatzius characterized the transition to AI as a multi-decade process rather than a short-term surge. He urged investors to maintain a balanced perspective that distinguishes between current hype and the technology's long-term potential. Additionally, the analysis pointed out that while AI investments have not significantly crowded out other business expenditures, there are risks associated with high valuations of AI-related stocks and concentrated spending among a few dominant technology companies.
