Morgan Stanley Endorses Bitcoin as Digital Gold in New Research

Morgan Stanley's Global Investment Committee has officially recognized Bitcoin as a scarce, non-sovereign store of value, likening it to gold. This endorsement comes amid increasing institutional interest and includes a formal recommendation for Bitcoin allocation in client portfolios, suggesting a range of 0-2% for balanced growth portfolios and 2-4% for those with a higher risk appetite.

The committee's allocation framework, established in October 2025, reflects the belief that Bitcoin's fixed supply and low market penetration make it a viable long-term investment. Morgan Stanley estimates that Bitcoin's market capitalization accounts for approximately 2% of a $130 trillion addressable market, which encompasses the global M2 money supply and gold.

In addition to the allocation recommendations, Morgan Stanley launched the MSBT, a spot Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Product, in April 2026, which has since attracted around $609 million in assets under management. The bank emphasizes educating clients on Bitcoin's characteristics, such as its fixed supply and lack of sovereign control, positioning it as a diversification tool rather than a speculative asset.

The focus on Bitcoin, rather than the wider digital asset market, highlights the bank's commitment to its monetary properties and store-of-value attributes. This formal recommendation from a major financial institution signals a significant step towards broader institutional adoption of Bitcoin as a legitimate investment option.
