Iraq Mediates US-Iran Diplomacy Amid Airstrike Tensions

Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid has expressed optimism regarding the United States' willingness to pursue a diplomatic resolution to its ongoing conflict with Iran. This comes as Iraq, which shares a long border with Iran and hosts US military personnel, has been directly affected by airstrikes that have occurred on its territory during the conflict.

In mid-June 2026, US and Iranian negotiators reached the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which aims to address the tensions between the two nations. President Trump has indicated a readiness to continue diplomatic efforts but cautioned that airstrikes could resume depending on the evolving situation. Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein announced that Prime Minister Mohammed Ali Al-Zaidi is set to visit both the US and Iran in July 2026 to help bridge the gaps between the two parties.

The Iraqi government has condemned recent US and Saudi airstrikes targeting Iran-backed paramilitaries within Iraq, which resulted in at least 20 fatalities. Baghdad characterized these strikes as violations of its sovereignty, emphasizing the need for a diplomatic approach to maintain stability in the region. The Islamabad MoU is viewed as a starting point for negotiations, with ongoing discussions about its implementation.
