Coinbase Launches Tokenized Stocks and Bonds, Aiming for Global Accessibility

Coinbase, a leading cryptocurrency exchange based in the United States, has recently launched a new initiative to offer tokenized stocks and bonds. CEO Brian Armstrong discussed this development in an interview, highlighting the potential benefits of tokenization for global investors. The new tokenized equities allow for 24/7 trading and aim to provide access to high-quality investments for individuals who currently lack brokerage accounts, particularly in developing regions.

Armstrong emphasized that the tokenized equities are designed as real securities, unlike many existing tokenized products that are merely derivatives or synthetic instruments. This innovation allows users to redeem their tokens one-to-one for the underlying shares, granting them shareholder rights, including dividends and voting privileges. Since the launch a few weeks ago, Coinbase has reported nearly one billion dollars in trading volume for these tokenized assets, indicating strong market interest and growth.

The company's vision extends beyond stocks and bonds, with plans to tokenize a variety of assets, including private companies and treasury securities. Armstrong believes that this approach will democratize access to investment opportunities, enabling individuals worldwide to participate in financial markets more easily and affordably. He argues that by reducing settlement risks and creating a unified liquidity pool, tokenization could significantly enhance the investment landscape for millions.
