JPMorgan Asset Management Highlights AI-Related Risks in Bond Markets

Gabriela Santos, Chief Market Strategist for the Americas at JPMorgan Asset Management, warned on August 18 about the emergence of AI-related concentration risks in fixed income markets. This risk, termed the 'AI-factor' or 'AI tentacle,' has transitioned from equity portfolios into the bond market, prompting a reevaluation of investment strategies.

Santos noted that companies developing AI infrastructure require substantial capital, which they often raise through bond issuance. This trend has led to a significant concentration in the investment-grade corporate bond market, resembling the equity market where a few large players dominate. Investment-grade corporate bond issuance has reached record levels for four consecutive months, with a notable portion linked to AI financing needs, particularly from major companies like Alphabet.

While Santos remains optimistic about the ongoing AI super-cycle, she advises investors to diversify their portfolios to mitigate the associated risks. She recommends including assets such as Treasuries, gold, and core real estate, which are expected to provide returns independent of AI-related market fluctuations. This guidance reflects JPMorgan's broader research into how AI is transforming credit markets and the implications for investment strategies.
