Nvidia Negotiates $3 Billion Investment in SB Energy for Ohio Data Center

Nvidia is in discussions to invest $3 billion in SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank, to support the development of a major AI data center in southern Ohio. This facility is part of the Stargate AI infrastructure initiative and is expected to become one of the largest data center complexes dedicated to artificial intelligence.

The proposed investment would help OpenAI secure more favorable financing terms for leasing the planned 10-gigawatt data center in Piketon, Ohio. The project aims to achieve approximately 800 megawatts of generation capacity by 2028, with total costs potentially exceeding $500 billion when including necessary chips and infrastructure.

Nvidia's financial backing is crucial as OpenAI currently lacks an investment-grade credit rating, which would otherwise lead to higher borrowing costs for SB Energy. By guaranteeing around $250 billion in financing, Nvidia would enable SB Energy to secure loans as if OpenAI had a strong financial standing. The negotiations are ongoing and may still face challenges due to the complexity of the financing arrangements.
