Nvidia Commits Up to $3 Billion to OpenAI's Ohio Data Center Project

Nvidia has announced a significant investment of up to $3 billion to support OpenAI's ambitious data center project in Pike County, Ohio. This investment is part of a deal with SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank, which is developing what could become one of the largest AI computing facilities in the world. The funding will be allocated in two phases: an initial $1.5 billion upon signing and an additional $1.5 billion contingent on SB Energy's planned initial public offering (IPO).

The Ohio campus is projected to have a power capacity of 10 gigawatts, with the first phase expected to be operational by 2028. The site was chosen for its ample land and existing power infrastructure, which are critical for supporting large-scale AI operations. Total costs for the project could exceed $500 billion if fully realized.

In previous negotiations, Nvidia and OpenAI had discussed potential investments of up to $100 billion specifically for deploying Nvidia's AI systems. However, the current agreement is more focused on energy and infrastructure investments through SB Energy, rather than direct hardware commitments. Additionally, Nvidia's financial guarantees for OpenAI's leasing capacity at the facility have been revised from approximately $250 billion to under $120 billion, streamlining the focus on leasing arrangements.
