OpenAI and Nvidia to Construct Major AI Factory in Ohio

OpenAI and Nvidia have announced plans to build a significant AI factory at the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County, Ohio, a site previously used for uranium enrichment during the Cold War. The project, unveiled on August 17, 2026, will involve the leasing of approximately 8 gigawatts of computing capacity over 20 years, with an initial phase of 4.25 gigawatts supported by Nvidia's credit guarantees, which are capped at $105 billion.

The development will be managed by SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank, which aims to establish a total generation capacity of 10 gigawatts at the site. Nvidia is investing $1.5 billion into this initiative, which will utilize Nvidia’s DSX AI factory platform. Construction is set to begin in 2028 and is expected to create around 35,000 construction jobs and 2,500 permanent positions once operational.

In addition to job creation, OpenAI and SB Energy have pledged $80 million in community benefits, with each contributing $40 million. OpenAI will also provide $84 million in AI tool credits for Ohio students. This project is part of OpenAI's broader strategy, with a revised compute spending target of approximately $600 billion through 2030, significantly lower than earlier estimates of $1.4 trillion.
