Circle Launches New Arc Blockchain to Expand Beyond USDC

Circle Internet Group, a prominent stablecoin developer, has introduced a new blockchain named Arc as part of its strategy to diversify beyond its $74 billion USDC stablecoin. The launch comes amid increasing competition in the global stablecoin market, where traditional banks and payment firms are beginning to establish their own dollar-backed stablecoins.

Circle describes Arc as a general-purpose "economic operating system" designed to facilitate payments, tokenized financial markets, lending, trading, and commerce. The blockchain will integrate Circle's payments network and its foreign-exchange platform for cross-currency settlements. Transaction fees on the Arc blockchain will be paid using Circle's USDC stablecoin.

Major companies, including BlackRock and Visa, are among the first validators for the Arc blockchain. This development follows a setback for Circle earlier this year when a consortium of 21 financial institutions, including Bank of America and Goldman Sachs, announced plans to launch their own U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin in 2027. As of now, Circle's stock has seen a decline of 36% over the past year, trading at $86.30 per share.
