Romania Destroys Russian-Designed Drones Near Neptun Deep Gas Project

On August 11, 2026, Romanian military divers successfully detonated two Russian-designed Gerbera drones that were drifting near the Neptun Deep offshore gas project in the Black Sea. The drones were spotted by a civilian vessel engaged in construction work for the project, which is set to become the largest offshore gas development in the European Union when production begins in 2027.

Romania's Defence Minister, Radu Miruta, confirmed the controlled detonations, while Ukraine verified that the drones did not belong to its forces, suggesting a likely Russian origin. Gerbera drones are designed for various military purposes, including reconnaissance and direct attacks on surface targets. The incident raises concerns about the security of critical energy infrastructure in a region affected by ongoing conflict.

The Neptun Deep project, developed by OMV Petrom and the state-owned Romgaz, is crucial for Europe as it seeks to reduce reliance on Russian gas supplies. The project taps into deep-water reserves in Romania's exclusive economic zone, approximately 90 nautical miles east of Constanța. The recent drone incident is part of a broader pattern of escalating incursions into Romanian territory, with multiple unauthorized drone sightings reported throughout 2026, including three Russian drones shot down by Romanian F-16 jets in July.

As a NATO member, Romania's territory and airspace are protected under the alliance's collective defense commitments. The Romanian government has thus far managed these security challenges domestically, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding its energy infrastructure amid rising tensions in the region.
