Samsung Plans Record $79 Billion Shareholder Payout Driven by AI Chip Demand

Samsung Electronics has announced plans to return between 90 trillion and 110 trillion won, approximately $65 billion to $79 billion, to shareholders in 2026. This unprecedented payout is fueled by a surge in demand for artificial intelligence semiconductors, particularly high-bandwidth memory chips, which have significantly boosted the company's profits.

Under its shareholder return framework for 2024 through 2026, Samsung commits to allocating 50% of its free cash flow to investors. The company also maintains a fixed annual dividend of 9.8 trillion won, which is distributed regularly regardless of performance. In comparison, Samsung distributed 20.9 trillion won through dividends and buybacks during 2024 and 2025 combined, making the projected 2026 payout potentially four to five times larger.

The announcement has positively impacted Samsung's stock, with shares and global depositary receipts rising approximately 5.9%. A board meeting is scheduled for August 21, 2026, to formally discuss and approve the specifics of the payout. Earlier in March 2026, Samsung revealed plans to invest over 110 trillion won, or about $80 billion, in AI chip technology, indicating a significant commitment to both shareholder returns and innovation.
