SC Freiburg Defeats Motherwell 2-1 in Conference League Qualifier

SC Freiburg secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Motherwell in the first leg of the UEFA Conference League playoff round at Fir Park on August 20. The Bundesliga side's win gives them a crucial advantage heading into the return leg scheduled for August 27 in Germany.

The match featured a pivotal moment when Motherwell defender Martin Moormann received a red card after a VAR review. This decision led to a penalty kick, which Matthias Ginter successfully converted, marking a key moment in Freiburg's victory. Despite the setback, Motherwell managed to score once, keeping the aggregate deficit to a single goal.

Freiburg, who finished seventh in the Bundesliga last season and reached the Europa League final in 2024/25, aims to advance further in European competition. For Motherwell, reaching this playoff round after defeating HJK Helsinki is a significant achievement, but they now face the challenge of overcoming a one-goal deficit without Moormann, should he be suspended for the second leg.
