BlackRock Invests $1 Billion in Bitcoin Amid Grayscale Outflows

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has seen significant growth, accumulating approximately $1.08 billion in net inflows over the past 20 days, according to data from Arkham Intelligence. In stark contrast, Grayscale's Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) has experienced outflows of around $254.7 million during the same period. This divergence highlights a shift in investor preference between the two leading Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

IBIT's inflows peaked with a remarkable $454 million on September 3, a figure that is exceptional for ETFs. The total holdings of IBIT now stand at about 785,000 BTC, with assets under management exceeding $60 billion. Meanwhile, GBTC holds roughly 130,000 BTC and has an assets under management of nearly $10 billion. The stark difference in fee structures—IBIT charges 0.25% annually compared to GBTC's 1.5%—is a significant factor influencing investor choices, as it translates to substantial cost savings for larger investments.

The broader U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF market now holds over 1.28 million BTC, representing around 6% of Bitcoin's total supply. This shift in market dynamics follows the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in January 2024, which has allowed firms like BlackRock and Fidelity to enter the market with competitive pricing and marketing strategies. Grayscale has attempted to mitigate the impact of these changes by introducing its Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC) with lower fees, but the ongoing outflows from GBTC suggest that its flagship product continues to face challenges in retaining investor interest.
