Spot Gold Prices Rise Nearly 2% Amid Economic Uncertainty

On August 21, 2026, spot gold prices increased nearly 2%, reaching $4,606.99 per ounce. The trading session saw prices fluctuate between $4,567 and $4,613, marking a significant uptick as investors sought safe-haven assets amidst ongoing economic uncertainty.

The rise in gold prices follows a strong performance earlier in the year, where prices surged from around $4,000 in late 2025 to over $5,000, a record at that time. After a period of consolidation in the $4,500 to $4,600 range, the recent gains in August reflect a month-over-month increase of approximately 10% to 12%.

Two primary factors are contributing to this upward trend. A weakening U.S. dollar has made gold more affordable for foreign buyers, thereby increasing demand. Additionally, changing expectations regarding Federal Reserve monetary policy, particularly the possibility of rate cuts, have made gold a more attractive investment as the opportunity cost of holding it decreases. Geopolitical risks further amplify this trend, as investors often turn to gold during times of global instability.
