Trump Administration Maintains Tariff Rates Amid Rising Energy Prices

The Trump administration has decided to keep its elevated tariff rates unchanged, primarily due to the impact of rising energy prices linked to the US-Iran conflict. Peter Harrell, a former senior director for international economics in the Biden administration, indicated that the surge in oil prices has effectively locked in the current tariff regime, making any adjustments to trade levies a secondary concern for the administration.

With Brent crude oil nearing $100 per barrel and gasoline prices exceeding $4.10 per gallon in many areas, the administration is wary of introducing additional economic variables. Harrell explained that the combination of high energy costs and existing tariffs creates a challenging environment for businesses that rely on imported goods, as they face a 10-12.5% cost increase before considering shipping and logistics expenses.

The tariffs currently affect imports from over 80 countries and were implemented around July 2026, following legal challenges to earlier trade measures. The ongoing military tensions with Iran have been a significant factor driving energy prices higher, as markets often react to potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil supply. Harrell's analysis suggests that the administration's inaction on tariffs is less a strategic choice and more a result of limited options due to geopolitical pressures.
