United States Urges Mexico to Regulate Chinese AI Hardware Exports

The U.S. government is exerting pressure on Mexican officials to implement new regulations concerning the export of artificial intelligence (AI) hardware. This initiative aims to address existing loopholes that allow Chinese companies and other foreign enterprises to bypass tariffs on these products. Sources familiar with the negotiations indicate that the proposed regulations would limit the number of components sourced from outside North America during the production of AI hardware.

AI hardware, which encompasses various products including chips and servers, has recently overtaken automobiles to become Mexico's largest export to the United States. This shift highlights the growing significance of the technology sector in Mexico's economy, as the country increasingly positions itself as a key player in the global supply chain for AI-related products. The U.S. initiative reflects broader concerns regarding national security and economic competition in the technology arena.
