US Launches 'Operation Economic Fury' Against Iran

President Donald Trump has announced a new sanctions initiative against Iran, termed 'Operation Economic Fury,' which he claims is the most aggressive economic campaign ever directed at a single nation. The announcement, made on August 19, emphasizes a shift from military options to financial measures as the primary strategy in U.S. foreign policy towards Iran. Trump warned that any country engaging in trade with Iran would face significant economic repercussions.

The initiative builds on existing sanctions that already target over 1,000 entities linked to Iran's economy. However, the most impactful aspect of the announcement is the threat of secondary sanctions, which could penalize nations providing financial support to Iran. In response to U.S. pressure, the United Arab Emirates has already severed financial ties with Iran, indicating the seriousness of the U.S. stance.

Following the announcement, oil prices surged by more than 2%, reflecting market concerns about potential disruptions in supply from Iran, a major oil producer. The effectiveness of these sanctions, particularly in relation to China—historically Iran's largest oil customer—remains uncertain, as Beijing has previously shown reluctance to comply with U.S. sanctions when it comes to accessing cheap oil.

This economic campaign occurs amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Israel with Iran, following military actions earlier this year. By framing the initiative as 'economic warfare,' the Trump administration is signaling a departure from diplomatic language typically associated with sanctions, marking a more confrontational approach to Iran's activities on the global stage.
