US Stock Markets Open Higher as Treasury Bond Buyback Program Lowers Yields

US stock markets experienced a positive opening on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite all rising. This uptick follows a decline in Treasury yields, attributed to the government's recent bond buyback operations aimed at reducing the supply of bonds in the market.

The Treasury Department's buyback program, which is set to run through 2026, involves purchasing older Treasury bonds known as 'off-the-run' securities. By removing these less liquid instruments from circulation, the Treasury aims to enhance market liquidity and manage cash balances effectively, especially around significant financial dates such as tax deadlines.

The Treasury has outlined a plan for up to $38 billion in liquidity support buybacks during the third quarter of 2026, along with an additional $25 billion for cash management within the short-term sector. These operations, which have been occurring once or twice a week, are designed to keep the bond market functional as the overall stock of Treasuries increases. As a result, the reduced bond supply has led to higher prices and lower yields, making equities more attractive to investors.
