Velocity Secures $10 Million in Series A Extension, Valuation Reaches $200 Million

Velocity, a stablecoin payment startup based in London, has successfully completed an additional $10 million in its Series A funding round, bringing the total raised in this round to $48 million. The company is now valued at $200 million, with notable participation from Visa Ventures, Circle Ventures, Haun Ventures, Ripple, Translink Capital, and Mirana Ventures.

The latest investment follows an earlier $38 million funding round completed in July. Velocity's platform is designed to enable payment companies and banks to utilize stablecoins for settlement, liquidity, and fund management, all while maintaining existing systems. CEO Eric Queathem, who has a background with Worldpay, emphasizes the need for innovation in the back-end settlement layer, which has been overlooked in favor of consumer-facing improvements over the past 15 years.

Visa's involvement in this funding round highlights the growing interest in stablecoin technology. Velocity does not foresee stablecoins replacing traditional bank cards but envisions a future where blockchain digital assets play a significant role in funding and settlement processes. Queathem predicts that within the next five years, global enterprises will increasingly hold on-chain assets, leading to a heightened demand for infrastructure that supports these digital transactions.
