US Treasury Auction Achieves Highest Demand in a Decade

The United States Treasury successfully auctioned $39 billion in 10-year notes on September 9, 2026, achieving the highest bid-to-cover ratio in a decade at 2.71. This indicates that investors submitted $2.71 in bids for every dollar of debt offered, marking the strongest demand since April 2016.

The auction cleared at a high yield of 4.834%, a level not seen since August 2007. Notably, foreign investors, categorized as indirect bidders, accounted for 79.2% of the total offering, while primary dealers received only 4.3%. This low allocation for dealers suggests robust demand from genuine buyers, contrasting with scenarios where high dealer participation typically indicates weak interest.

The auction's results come amid a $6 billion bond buyback announcement from the Treasury, aimed at managing liquidity in older securities. The high foreign participation in the auction indicates that concerns about a significant withdrawal from US government debt may be exaggerated, as the competitive yield of nearly 4.8% on a 10-year bond positions it as a viable alternative to equities for investors.
