Blockstream Introduces SHRINCS Quantum-Safe Signature Scheme in New BIP
Blockstream has unveiled a new Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) that introduces the SHRINCS post-quantum signature scheme. This innovative scheme is hash-based and has a minimum size of 548 bytes, making it approximately nine times larger than current Schnorr signatures, yet still smaller than the NIST-approved ML-DSA and SPHINCS+ schemes. The SHRINCS scheme has successfully undergone production environment testing on the Liquid sidechain and includes a copy of the Bitcoin white paper.
While SHRINCS offers advancements in security, it also presents certain limitations. The BIP indicates that security proofs for the scheme are still pending, and it is stateful, meaning that it requires the storage of used keys for each signature. This requirement adds 16 bytes to the signature size with each use. Additionally, in the case of device loss, a stateless fallback transaction recovery would necessitate approximately 5777 bytes.
Blockstream projects that Bitcoin's transaction speed could be maintained at around 3 transactions per second (TPS) with the adoption of SHRINCS. This speed could potentially increase to 6.7 TPS when combined with zero-knowledge proof aggregation, enhancing the overall efficiency of Bitcoin transactions.
