Challenges Ahead for Model API Businesses, Says Venture Capitalist

Zhu Xiaohu, a founding partner at Jinsha River Ventures, has expressed concerns about the long-term sustainability of high gross margins in the model API business. Currently, companies like Anthropic enjoy a gross margin of approximately 60%, largely due to their advanced intelligence capabilities, particularly in coding scenarios. However, Zhu warns that as competing models improve, the pricing dynamics may shift dramatically, potentially reducing prices to one-tenth of their current levels, which would challenge the ability to maintain premium pricing.

Zhu emphasizes that while Anthropic may remain ahead in the short term, even a slight increase in intelligence may not justify significantly higher prices for users. He predicts that the long-term gross margin for model APIs could settle between 10% and 20% as competition intensifies and price wars become inevitable. This urgency for companies like Anthropic to go public may be driven by the need to capitalize on their current market position before these changes take effect.

In addition to discussing model APIs, Zhu highlighted the broader potential of the AI office market, which he believes surpasses that of AI coding. He notes that AI coding emerged first due to its clear tasks and verifiable results, but the larger opportunity lies in general-purpose AI applications for white-collar work, akin to Microsoft Office. The competitive edge in this space will depend on the integration of models, harnesses, products, and contextual applications.

Regarding Tencent's position in the AI landscape, Zhu pointed out that the company is a late entrant but has made significant strides with its Hunyuan model, which has gained traction in the domestic market. He mentioned that WorkBuddy, an application developed by Tencent, has become a leading office agent, benefiting from its integration with WeChat for Work and other Tencent services, which provide a robust contextual framework for users.
