General Atlantic Revives IPO Plans with JPMorgan as Lead Underwriter

General Atlantic, a prominent growth equity firm managing approximately $130 billion in assets, has selected JPMorgan Chase to lead its renewed initial public offering (IPO) efforts. The firm is also collaborating with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley as part of the underwriting syndicate. This marks a significant shift as General Atlantic resumes its plans for a public listing after a two-year hiatus.

The firm initially filed confidentially with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in December 2023 when it managed around $77 billion. However, unfavorable market conditions at that time led to the shelving of the IPO plans. Since then, General Atlantic's assets have increased significantly, reflecting both active capital raising and deployment strategies.

The potential IPO could take place as early as 2026, although specific timelines and terms have yet to be finalized. The decision to pursue a public listing comes as large private equity and growth equity firms have increasingly sought the advantages of being publicly traded, including lower capital costs and enhanced visibility. General Atlantic has a history of investing in high-growth companies, with notable early investments in firms like Facebook and Airbnb.

The competitive landscape for growth equity has intensified, with several firms expanding their presence in the market. The involvement of JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley is expected to provide General Atlantic with access to a broad range of institutional investors, including mutual funds, sovereign wealth funds, and pension managers, enhancing the potential success of the IPO.
