U.S. Cryptocurrency Regulation Progresses Amid CLARITY Act Uncertainty
Zach Pandl, the research director at Grayscale, announced that the U.S. Senate will hold a procedural vote on the CLARITY Act on September 15. This legislation aims to create comprehensive regulations for the cryptocurrency market but faces challenges due to the current political landscape, with the Republican Party holding 53 seats and needing Democratic support for the bill to advance. Market analysts predict a low likelihood of the bill passing by 2026.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the CLARITY Act, Grayscale asserts that advancements in U.S. cryptocurrency regulation will continue. Regulatory clarity is emerging in several areas, including stablecoins, token issuance, tokenized securities, and perpetual futures. The GENIUS Act has already established a federal framework for payment stablecoins, while proposed rules from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission are expected to clarify token financing. Additionally, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission has initiated regulated channels for perpetual futures through platforms like Kalshi and Coinbase.
