UniCredit Explores Cryptocurrency Custody Services Amid European Banking Expansion
UniCredit, Italy's second-largest bank based in Milan, is reportedly considering the launch of cryptocurrency custody services as part of its expansion into digital asset offerings. The bank is in the process of selecting technology providers to establish the necessary infrastructure for holding digital assets and facilitating their trading.
The potential services under consideration include tokenized investment products, fixed-income securities, stablecoin usage, and direct exposure to cryptocurrencies. This move aligns with a broader trend among European banks, such as Spain's BBVA and Santander's Openbank, which have already introduced cryptocurrency trading and custody services for their customers. Additionally, Germany's Deutsche Bank is working with Bitpanda to develop its own custody solutions.
The European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) is expected to provide a regulatory framework that will support banks like UniCredit in launching these services. Furthermore, UniCredit is participating in a collaborative effort with 36 other banks from 15 European countries to create Qivalis, a company focused on issuing a euro stablecoin. Last year, the bank also offered structured products linked to the BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF, demonstrating its commitment to integrating cryptocurrency into its service offerings.
