South Korean Leveraged ETFs Linked to Chip Manufacturers Experience Nearly $1 Billion in Outflows

In August, leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs) associated with South Korean chip manufacturers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have faced significant capital outflows, totaling nearly $1 billion. This marks the first monthly outflow for these products since their introduction at the end of May.

Specifically, leveraged products tracking Samsung Electronics recorded outflows of $381 million, while those linked to SK Hynix saw outflows of $601 million. The downturn in investor interest coincides with a broader cooling of enthusiasm for AI trading and increased regulatory measures aimed at curbing demand for such financial products.

The trend follows a tumultuous period in July, during which the South Korean Kospi index experienced a historic decline of 22%. In response to the market volatility, regulators have implemented stricter requirements, including higher minimum margin thresholds for new investors and a mandatory five-day simulated trading period before engaging in leveraged trading.
